Washington’s war hawks know all too well the predictable result of their brutal ‘maximum pressure’ sanctions regime against Venezuela: US economic warfare has wiped out at least $50 billion in yearly export revenues. Still, the embattled Maduro government has managed to withstand US pressure on the country. 

Despite this, the reality now is that Venezuela is in default – a country which has descended into one of the great economic and humanitarian crises in of the young 21st Century. But President Nicolas Maduro sees an opportunity with President Biden and the influential Progressive wing of the Democratic party – as he makes his public plea to Washington to make a deal. Will Maduro turn his country’s future around?
